Mockingbird

If you ever wondered how you sound to others, find a toddler to repeat each word back to you! Sarah will be glad to act as a personal secretary when she is not directing the Lost and Found.

A list of our crimes:

Mommy constantly adds "ok" to the end of sentences. Sarah learned to say "no" long before "yes", but "k" is her favorite term of acquiesence AND end of a sentence. After poking me in the eye one day, she very sweetly examined my face saying, "Mama eye k? Eye k?" Other favorites include, "Baby out, k?" and "I play big blocks, k?"

(Clearly she does not know her name.)

Max is attempting to teach Sarah to share. What has she learned to say? "Mine! Mine!" and "Baby's turn". He also says "Whoa!" often so Sarah says, "Whoa, Max!"

Daddy calls group hugs "family squeezes". When Sarah notices everyone is around (whether its dinner, bedtime, or standing in the hall) she will call, "fam-by squeez, fam-by squeez!"

My favorite time is to listen to her after she goes to bed and is lying in the crib talking to herself. We hear a chorus, "Night, moon! Night, Max! Night, Mama! Night, Dada! Love Max! Love Mama! Love Dada!"

Jason was out of town on a business trip and I wanted to make a video to send to him of Sarah saying goodnight. She clammed up as soon as I pulled out my phone and the first video was 20 seconds of smiling instead of talking. She needs a little coaxing on this one, but it helped decrease Daddy's homesickness. View video here.

Sweet Sounds.

Elephant March

Just another day in the city...

Both kids got to watch the elephants parade outside Max's preschool.
Sarah Richards was not impressed.

Greenville apparently has a lot in common with India...

Photographic proof to show Max that Mommy and Daddy HAVE ridden an elephant!

Guess who wants to visit India now?

Grateful Living

There are days when my heart is so grateful it might burst.

Grateful to celebrate 95 years of my grandfather with family and friends from his entire life span.

Grateful my children are able to know and love this incredible man!

Grateful to stand outside Sarah's door on the same night and listen to my mother rocking and singing her granddaughter to sleep.

Grateful to live near my family and share our lives with them.

Grateful for the love of grandparents - both mine and my children's!

Bohemian Rhapsody

This summer will mark ten years of marriage. TEN YEARS. In honor of this landmark we are embarking on a year of pre-planned dates. Each month we will choose an envelope containing a "mystery date" and then schedule a time for it. I will publish most of our escapades to hold us accountable for actually going on the dates!

Our first adventure (lucky for me) combined our monthly date and Jason's birthday. He was not allowed to complain as my birthday has been combined with our wedding anniversary several times, despite premarital assurances that he would never attempt such an atrocity. The kids were turned over to their oh-so-generous grandparents and we headed to Asheville to do what we do best as a couple: travel and eat.

Our hotel came highly recommended by many friends and we certainly saw many Greenville faces throughout the weekend. Located in Biltmore Village at the entrance to Biltmore Estate, The Grand Bohemian was perfectly situated for walking to dinner and shops.

Love the curtains to the driveway!

After being greeted by a stuffed warthog, roaring fire, various twiggy light fixtures and an art gallery, we were beginning to understand the "bohemian" name!

Velvet Headboard and Antler Chandelier

Shimmery curtains

Nail studded mirror
This was the best mirror ever - makes you look tall and skinny!

How do we always pick hotels with windows to the bathroom area?

Every room needs a marble bust.

The romance was really heating up, especially after dinner. We noticed the unsavory smell of smoke as we concluded our meal. The waitress informed us that it was not a cooking incident but rather appeared to be related to the furnace. Immediately after exiting the restaurant, multiple fire trucks appeared. Jason insisted on going back to check on the problem, but I think he really just wanted a discount on our food!

All the buildings in Biltmore Village have the same architecture from the church

to the Hardees.

A visit to Biltmore House was at the top of our activity list. Jason had never experienced its splendor and I certainly have a new appreciation for estate life after watching Downton Abbey!

Biltmore Estate was built by George Vanderbilt in the late 19th century as a mountain retreat. Although still owned by the family, it now functions as a tourist attraction. The estate covers 8000 acres and houses a winery, dairy farm, spectacular gardens, and plenty of trails for horseback riding, walking or bicycling. Naturally we didn't engage in any physical activity more strenuous than lifting a wine glass!

Monument to Frank or ...

monument to Frank?

Bedroom of Edith Vanderbilt
(Guess they didn't have to worry about their spouse stealing the covers!)

The house also featured an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, workout area circa early 1900s, even elevators and an intercom system. But it was the downstairs that interested me the most. Unlike Downton Abbey each servant had a private bedroom. There were 3 kitchens - one for meat, one for pastries, and the main kitchen. I might have annoyed Jason just a bit by constantly comparing and contrasting the two houses...

Mrs. Patmore would fit in perfectly!

The Vanderbilts planted millions of trees and established one of the first foresty programs. Jason told me repeatedly that the landscape architect, Fredrick Olmstead, had also designed the park system in Louisville; a far superior claim than his other famous park, Central Park.  Jason may or may not have been needling me in retribution for my Downton Abbey fixation...

I know a baby who has a belly like this one!

We concluded our weekend with spa treatments, book reading, more delicious food, and sleep. Raising two young children is exhausting. But falling into bed every night beside your best friend and partner in your life's most important endeavor is incredibly satisfying. Having time to enjoy alone together is also satisfying and definitely refreshing!

Birthday Breakfast

A momentous birthday deserves a momentous breakfast.
But if you are just turning 34, then Waffle House will do!

Our family does receive the VIP treatment at Waffle House.
Max scored this awesome bling during a trip last fall.

And Max and Sarah got special Mouse waffles;
Mickey for him (with a bow tie)

and Minnie for her.

Breakfast and a show!

Sarah ate every bite and stole bacon off Daddy's plate.

We brought our own presents and hot chocolate cupcakes for Daddy, but next time those might be included as well. He has mentioned Waffle House is an ideal location for a birthday party...

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Science Experiment

Max and Sarah received materials for "growing" animals in their stockings at Christmas. Max was bursting with excitement to watch the dinosaurs grow from tiny creatures into ferocious beasts. Sarah was excited to proclaim "Duck!" repeatedly. Max suggested making a "hypothesis" for how long it would take the animals to grow.  (I'm not sure where Max learned the word "hypothesis" but he uses it frequently and correctly. Mommy trick: it is also helpful to break out the term when I'm trying to convince him to do something like help peel carrots and we make a hypothesis about how full the sink will be with carrot peelings.)

For our science experiment we carefully followed the directions on the package: Place in water and watch grow to 600% of original size.

Max's Dinosaurs:

Sarah's Duck:

Hypothesis 1: One Minute
Hypothesis 2: Five Minutes
Hypothesis 3: 10 Minutes
Hypothesis 4: 30 Minutes

We watched and watched and watched.

Mommy's Hypothesis: Overnight
Hypothesis Number I've Lost Count Because These Silly Animals Aren't Growing.

One Week Later

I don't know if we had delusions of grandeur, but we eventually consolidated all animals into one bowl because the mixing bowl was needed for another project, otherwise known as dinner. The animals plumped, but never grew particularly large. They resembled misshapen lumps more than animals. Max was thrilled to state his original hypotheses were wrong, but he had later guessed it would take longer than 1 day and his final hypothesis was accurate. He also enjoyed fishing the slimy dinosaurs out of the water to examine at the end of the experiment. (And yes, my son performs science experiments in his pajamas despite the hour of the day.)

Final result: Experiment Failed.
Conclusion: Do not buy animals to grow that only cost one dollar.
 Stick with Grow-A-Date instead.

Movie Night

Most 1 year olds do not need a sleeping bag, but Sarah wants to do everything like Big Brother. She isn't quite ready to sleep in her precious "gi-affe" bag, so a Movie Night seemed like a good excuse to try it out!

Ready to watch Cinderella!

At first, she was enthralled by the Princess

but a movie might also be a stretch for a 1 year old, especially one who doesn't watch TV often.

There was some wiggling...

some giggling...

and some chattering before she wandered off.

Maybe Sarah would prefer Snow White?

Max asked to make popcorn after Sarah left. Sometimes it is nice not to share everything...
