Accessorize

Dear Fashion Guru,
I don't know how to make myself stand out in the crowd of toddlers on the playground! I feel trapped in the same tired sleepers. What can I do to shine? Please help!

Signed,
Late Bloomer

Dear Late Bloomer,
The trick to a fresh look is to use accessories to stay on trend!

Try a polka dot bag for contrast.

Or use multiple rubber bands to create an unexpected bracelet.

If bows aren't your thing, wide hairbands are another option to tame those curls.

Every lady needs a selection of hats to pull her ensemble together, of course!

And sometimes the boys do, too!

Don't worry about having the perfect clothes, Late Bloomer. Let accessories express your personality and show your funky spirit! Vogue On!

Summer Soirees

Everyone knows it's always a party with The Max.
But if you add the Balloon Pirate...

It's a celebration!

Max requested "a dog stuck in a tree" balloon. When we encountered the Balloon Pirate again the next day at a birthday party, Max asked for "a cat stuck in a tree". The pirate peered a little closer at him and pondered the probability of two different children making such strange requests in two consecutive days. Nope, that's just the Max livening up the affair.

We hosted our annual summer barbecue for our Sunday School class. Apparently our class has taken the directive to "be fruitful and multiply" quite seriously. We had almost 80 people with lots and lots of little ones!

The summer soiree season ended with a party at a neighbor's lake house. Guess who wants a slide on the dock of our lake house now?

Party on!

4 and 3/4 Years

Dear Max,

As you move closer to age five, I often look around for my little boy. You haven't had the chubbiness of a toddler for quite a while, but now you seem older in so many ways other than appearance. We are delighted by your ability to use appropriate manners and communicate in a respectful way. Do you always do it? No. But you can and you are eager to try most of the time. There is an increasing desire for chores and responsibility. We may have to discuss an allowance soon because you have realized you can weasel coins for your piggy bank in exchange for the chores. Of course, Mommy informed you that the money you save must be used to fund your scotch tape habit. You have an impressive vocabulary and a hilarious way of cocking your head to the side, raising your eyebrows and pursing your lips as you issue a proclamation.

After eliminating napping (your choice) for a month and the ensuing behavioral nightmares that arose, you have returned to napping 2-3 times per week. There were days when your room was completely destroyed during "quiet time" and more than once I was summoned upstairs to find you stripped down to your underwear. Working towards earning an electric train to be used during quiet time helped quell those particular issues.

Teaching school has become a new interest over the summer. You make class "lists" and post them on the wall. There are different classes according to who is teaching with you and the classes learn different things. You have conducted class using the chalkboard, in the bathtub, outside and while waiting in line. It is neat to see your handwriting progress as you create written agendas for your daily activities: Trains, Draw, Scone, Walk, Stop.

During your several bouts of illness this summer we allowed you to watch more movies, including some Disney classics and Toy Story 3. The parts I found terrifying (the toys on the verge of being incinerated in the huge furnace at the dump) didn't make you pause. It did inspire you to embark on a garbage-themed play streak, which lasted forever. We had enough shredded tissue and tiny pieces of paper to fill an entire red bin. Your play also taught Sarah an important new word: "Buzz". Not as in bees, but as in Buzz Lightyear.

The new maturity is evident in many ways. The play-doh "circus" included a discussion of safety issues. We don't want anyone falling off the tightrope! Babba receives lectures from Max when he knows he is not being properly supervised or led astray. "Sometimes Babba lets me do that, but I tell him I'm not supposed to."  Max, you really want to be responsible in the caretaking of Sarah. "I block Baby so she doesn't go out the door because I know she might get hurt." Alas, her greatest danger is being loved to death by her big brother!

Safety First!

You will always be our silly boy!

Hot Fun in the City

Summer heat is best enjoyed with company!

Greenville Drive game with the Womacks

As we arrived at the stadium, Max remarked, "Mommy, I'm glad you are here because Daddy let me get sick last year." Ahh...memories. See here for details of the fateful night.

Regular play dates were a necessity for the long, hot month of August. The zoo, park, splash pad, paint, sprinkler, pool - we tried them all. The Children's Museum provided a cool respite and everything is more fun with your buddies!

Sarah really wants to participate in the brick enterprise.

Three sets of brothers/sisters does not equal a photo opportunity.

Future Olympians

Watching the London Olympics with my sister (a 24-year tradition) naturally produced speculation on exactly which sports Max and Sarah would participate in as Future Olympians.

Perhaps Taekwondo?

Max is second from right

The Marathon?

No, these aren't quite right.

After careful consideration of physique and raw talent, we have determined their respective sports:

Sarah - Women's Weightlifting

Max - Women's Artistic Gymnastics

Or maybe they will stick with being the Olympic Mascot!

Look for them in the XXXV Olympiad in 2032!

16 Months

Dear Sarah,

Miss Independent has arrived! You are so intent on doing things your way, on your own. Food can no longer be spooned into your eagerly waiting mouth; you must hold the spoon. You point to the food and then point to your tray. You want to put your shoes on and take them off by yourself. You open the closet and point to the outfit of your choice...or drag it from the drawer and toss it on the floor. Control, control, control.

Another important skill you have developed for mealtimes is joining your family in prayer. You clasp your hands together and beam as Max recites the blessing. You nod your head along with the prayer and then clap when it is finished. Hooray for God!

The constant sound of an engine pervades our home. Mommy calls it your motorboat noise, but Daddy believes it sounds more like an airplane. The "phfffffphffffffphfffff" erupts when you are frustrated. Or hungry. Or in the car. Or you needs aren't being met quickly enough. Or when you think something is funny. Basically any time is an appropriate time for the motorboat!

Sarah, you love animals! The kitties are your favorite, but dogs receive an excited reception as well. You adore "Big B" (Baxter) at Mimi's house, Beau at Grandma Beau's (hence the name) house, and any dogs who walk past us. Stuffed animals are the lucky recipients of your caring nature, too. You love to snuggle them and take care of them. Jumping into a pile of stuffed animals is a favorite pastime!

An outside girl at heart, you will go to the door and beg to venture out. When it rains, you gaze at the porch with the saddest expression. You often look out the door and then go get your shoes - you really don't need any words to get that point across!

We love watching you develop and become an amazing little person!
Love, Mommy
