2 and 3/4 Years

Dear Sarah,

You have been telling us for months, "I'm a Big Girl! I'm not a Baby!" but it has finally become a reality for us during the past few weeks. The big girl bed, big girl underwear, and big girl attitude have all arrived! We are very proud of how easily you have transitioned with these huge milestones, but it also tinged with sadness as we say goodbye to the trappings of your infancy, such as the crib and diapers. "Blank" (or Blankie) and "Love-love" (the lovey) remain your faithful companions in your new bed. Now you have become obsessed with the corner of your blankie that is unraveling. You insist on holding the "cor-nah" specifically when going to sleep and like to rub it on your face. Blankie is definitely starting to show its age.

My big girl now expresses her displeasure by crossing her arms like a genie and saying "No!" Your latest dictate is "No kisses!" One day you called me "Mom" and I swear you are starting to roll your eyes at me!

Your beautiful face is a mirror of your emotions. Unhappiness is as evident in your pout as excitement is in your smile and squinty eyes. The curls continue to delight everyone, but your hair seems to grow bigger instead of longer! You are constantly brushing it out of your face as it escapes from the confines of a bow. However, you refuse to even consider a rubber band and are adamantly opposed to ponytails.

There is no walking, only hopping, skipping, and galloping. Daddy insists that you need a set of coconuts to bang together as you gallop throughout the house, like in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Sitting still is only accomplished when you are interested in an activity, not at meal times or when Mommy wants to take a picture!

The expressions and accents you use make us giggle; some days you sound Southern and sometimes it sounds like you hail from New Jersey.  "It's o-vah!" you call when you have finished an activity. "Was-cough", "Clof-wah", and "Washcloth" are all the same word. And it is "Frankieeee", not Frank, for the cat.

Sarah,  your natural tendency toward bossiness is showing even at school. The teacher reports you are very smart and eager to "help" the other children. She said you steer them to the correct center when they wander off and help correct them if they sing the wrong words to a song. Unsurprisingly, your teacher adores you and says you are a delight to have in the class. She stated you have started talking more as the year progresses and you become more comfortable. We were shocked to learn that you hadn't been talking non stop at school all year long!

Your enthusiasm and loving nature are such precious gifts to our family. Nothing makes you happier than having our whole family together, especially for a family squeeze. They are simply not allowed if all four members are not present. You always check to make sure that we are all accounted for and that you know everyone's whereabouts.

We are so lucky to have you! We love our almost 3 year old!

Love, Mommy
