The Polar Express

(Red text represents lines from the book)

While it may seem as though The Polar Express is a Christmas book, Max believes it is appropriate for ALL seasons. He celebrated the Fourth of July with a dramatic reading and viewing of the movie. After Thanksgiving, Max was jittery with anticipation each day as he wondered if another trip on the Polar Express was in his future. Luckily for him, it was!

And this year Sarah, Mimi, and Babba were included on the ride!

The train museum provided entertainment while waiting for the call to board...

But even with all those amazing electric trains, Sarah and Max were attracted to the toy trains just like the ones they have at home.

Round Trip Tickets to the North Pole!

"All Aboard!"
Well," he said, "are you coming?" "Where?" I asked."Why, to the North Pole of course! This is the Polar Express!"
The train was filled with other children, all in their pajamas and nightgowns. Outside, the lights of towns and and villages flickered in the distance as the Polar Express raced northward.

We drank hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars.

(and ate cookies, too!)

The reading aloud of The Polar Express!

"There," said the conductor, "is the North Pole."

SANTA CLAUS!

"Let's have this fellow here. Now what would you like for Christmas?" Santa asked. What I wanted more than anything was one silver bell from Santa's sleigh. He stood, holding the bell high above him and called out,"The first gift of Christmas!"

Santa handed the bell to me, and I put it in my bathrobe pocket.

Santa complimented Max on his flashing Rudolph slippers, which was nice since he almost missed Santa is his determination to get the slippers on his feet!

Sarah was much more excited about the bell than about seeing Santa Claus again.

We sang Christmas carols and ate candies with nougat centers as white as snow.

Even Rudolph got to participate during his song!

Family Fun!

Guess The Max is ready for bed!

The conductor cupped his hands around his mouth, "MERRY CHRISTMAS," he shouted. The Polar Express let out a loud blast from its whistle and sped away.
At one time most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed, it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it does for all who truly believe.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town: Sarah's Edition

Book Review by Baby Sarah

There are pictures of him posted everywhere. A large man in a red suit with hair on his face - who could he be? At first, his large belly made me giggle. His hat with the white ball made a wonderful accessory for a baby's head. But then my brother demonstrated how the big man says "Boo!" instead of the more gentle "Ho, ho, ho" that Mommy had taught me. His big, black boots look threatening. And the book and song speak about him watching us when we are sleeping and awake? Sounds kind of scary to this little girl! Especially since I know how to pout...

Is it any wonder I screamed in terror when I encountered the real Santa Claus?

No book could prepare me for this!
Mommy, help! Save me!

There is no way you are putting me in his lap!
Is Max safe?

I am watching you.

Max asked for "electric cars and a racetrack" for Christmas.
I told Max to put in my request for a baby doll just in case this guy really does bring toys.

He has even taken over the food - Santa is on the wrapper!

Oh well, he tastes good. So does this chocolate cake.

Alright, any man who brings chocolate is ok with me! Just don't let him get too close.

I'll stick with my Mommy and Daddy and brother - less hairy!

If you buy this book, be wary of Santa Claus!

Christmas Reading List

The strains of familiar music playing. Houses twinkling with lights inside and out. The smell of homemade goodies wafting through the air. They all indicate the start of a special season as Christmas approaches! One of our family's favorite harbingers of Christmas is the daily reading of Christmas-themed books! As we celebrate with various Christmas activities this year, we are reminded of the books that inspire and delight us at Christmastime. Included in our reading list are books from past and present, such as the Little Golden Books from my own childhood that Max insisted on bringing from Mimi's house, and more recent books that have initiated new traditions.

The Elf of the Shelf is the leader of our list. Sparkle the Elf (also referred to as "Baby") returned with new hiding spots and silly antics to brighten even the earliest of mornings!

Let the Christmas Season of 2012 officially commence!

Family Pictures

Max and Sarah are smilers. They smile when they wake up in the morning. They smile at the cats. They smile when they brush their teeth. They smile when they give hugs. They smile when they are being sneaky. They smile at strangers. They smile morning, noon, and night. But put them in front of a paid professional and ask them to smile - the smiles disappear.

Was Mommy really requesting so much? Just a few pictures of the entire family instead of someone being hidden behind the camera. Although there were some beautiful individual shots (including ones I've already shared)...

this was as close as we got to family harmony.

I am the only person in my family who cares about pictures. Everyone else likes having them, but doesn't want to take them; not my husband or my children or my parents or my in-laws. They moan about being the subjects. They complain about not understanding the camera. I am the lone voice calling in the wilderness, "Take pictures! Preserve the memories!"

I know it is possible to have family pictures. Others succeed where we have failed. Now if we could only learn their secret...

Stinker!

Favorite guys

Is there an indoctrination program that produces the desire for picture-taking ?

I'm out of here!

If so, sign us up!
If not, then tell me some bribes that will work better!

In Thanksgiving

I am thankful for the smiles of these two precious people who never want to smile for pictures!

I am thankful for the many people in Louisville who graciously opened their homes and tables to my wild bunch.

I am thankful that my children have friends in Louisville whom they are just as excited to see as we are! Jack, Calvin, Jax, and Cooper got special discussion in the car - no offense to the others!

Jax and Sarah - the perfect pair of trouble!

I am thankful for the new babies of friends and relatives who allow me to snuggle their tiny bundles (Miles, Blake, and twins Grant and Owen) and get a baby fix without having to make another one of my own.

Baby Miles!

I am thankful for chasing after a non-stop, bossy, stubborn, willful, independent ball of energy who keeps me in shape and laughing all the time.

I am thankful for the times when Max's whining makes me want to hide inside a soundproof room because he has the breath to speak.

I am thankful for insurance and the financial resources to manage trips to the ER in the middle of the night in a place far from home.

I am thankful for the kind and engaging intake nurse at the second hospital we visited for her compliments on Max's pajamas and her ability to put him at ease.

I am thankful that our visit to the ER was quick and relatively painless and Max was excited about being up in the middle of the night instead of feeling upset or scared.

I am thankful that although November has been the month of hospital visits, they have ended positively with my grandmother back in her own home and Darin walking again after his surgery. And I'm thankful November is almost over!

Max is thankful for....Kyle and soccer.
Sarah is thankful for....baby dolls and pumpkin bread.
Daddy is thankful for.....moments of quiet!
