So Long, Farewell!

Max's New Year Resolutions:
No more Pelt.
No more thumb-sucking.

How do you properly honor (and mourn) the loss of your best friends? With a party, of course! Max made cupcakes - strawberry with vanilla icing - per Pelt's request. He even took pictures of the cooking process with his new camera to commemorate the event (can you tell he is my child?)

Max served as host. The guest list included Nana and Papa Mike, Mimi and Babba, Baby Sarah, and Mommy and Daddy. Everyone gathered to share remembrances of Pelt and study the photo albums highlighting his life with Max.

As the party progressed, the impending loss began to make Max quiet and a little sad.

The guests said their goodbyes.

And the time had come.

Max decided to give Pelt to a child at the hospital. He said, "That little boy or girl may not have a lovey. They may need someone to hold." He wrote a letter to this unknown child:
Dear Friend,

This is my Pelt. He was a very good friend to me. He is so special. I used to suck my thumb when I held him. Now that I'm a big boy I want someone else to have Pelt to love like I did. Please take good care of him so he doesn't miss me too much. I love Pelt and I hope you do too. I will miss him.

Love, Max

Max shared a final embrace with Pelt before packing him (and Pelt #2) into a box. We wrapped the box in Christmas candy paper (Pelt's favorite) and sent him to the hospital. Max was not the only one shedding tears.

That night we looked through the photo albums of Pelt pictures before bed. Max said, "Don't worry, Mommy. I can still love him in the pictures."

And he eventually went to sleep. Without his Pelt and without his thumb.

Best Friends Forever

Max met his best friend when he was six months old. There were many suitors vying for attention, but the stripes grabbed his interest. They reminded him of Frank. A beautiful relationship was born.

Max and Pelt. Pelt and Max.

In Good Times...

and in Bad Times.

Pelt went well with a book

and a cat

and even television.

Pelt loved to get outside

and visit others.

He was there in sickness...

and in health.

And always ready for a laugh!

Max wouldn't ever let anything happen to his best friend.

They were inseparable.

Somewhere along the way it became a trio. Max, Pelt, and Thumb. Wherever Pelt was to be found, so was Thumb. And after 3 1/2 years, it was time to break up the party. We talked about losing Thumb and keeping Pelt, and Max did make halfhearted attempts. But clearly Pelt and Thumb were too interconnected. After much discussion, the date of the long goodbye was set...

All I Want for Christmas is You!

My favorite memories of Christmas this year were not necessarily captured on camera. In fact, I often put down the camera in order to be more present (and accepted the result being pictures of my family that are more than a bit humorous). A few of those moments:

Reading and discussing the nativity story with a boy who may not understand the theology, but clearly comprehends babies and birthdays!

Witnessing the delight Max found in giving the gifts he had chosen for Sarah and family members, and feeling proud that he wanted to hand those out before he opened the wrapped presents designated for him.

Incorporating Sarah into our Christmas traditions and making new ones with her. And being right that her favorite gift would be a roll of paper towels!

Feeling even more excited to be a parent at Christmas than to be a child. I insisted on getting Max up early because I couldn't wait any longer!

Shedding tears (at more than one time) during the season because I felt so incredibly happy to be with my husband, children, siblings, parents, and extended family! Our life is very full of the most wonderful gifts.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!
