2 and 3/4

Dear Max,

As you continue to get older I am spending less time blogging and uploading pictures and more time enjoying fun games with you! Whenever we call you "The Max" you immediately repeat it in confirmation, as if to say, "Yes, yes, I am The Max." There was another boy named Max in your summer class. Your teachers elected to start calling you "Maxwell" and the other child "Max". We were amazed that you (and your classmates) completely understood this concept. You would tell us, "There's 2 Maxes. I'm Maxwell at school. I Max at home."Although we were not initially planning for you to attend the summer program, several of your friends were going and you kept insisting that you wanted to go "to school". Your poor teachers had nothing but boys this summer! You were thrilled by thewater days and having your own personal squirt bottle. Every week after the summer session ended you would ask "I go to school today?"

The summer program had one other added benefit - all the boys were starting to potty train at the beginning of the summer! I believe that watching your peers had a huge impact on your success! By the beginning of August, you were wearing big boy underpants (decorated with diggers, fire trucks, cars, and trains) every day. You have not mastered pooping in the potty yet, but you request a diaper rather then getting your underpants dirty.

We had a fun summer! You were a water bug in the pool. We decided against swim lessons this year except for the informal version from Mimi and Babba. You started putting your head in the water ("I get my hair wet?") and jumping off the side to someone's waiting arms. Your favorite water activity is throwing the torpedoes (pee-does) and making someone dive for them repeatedly...usually your cousins. One big change that occurred this summer is that you became Babba's pool buddy. No one else would satisfy you and the rest of us were instructed to leave the water so you two could be alone. We also began to visit the Splash Pad, which you both loved and were frightened by. Your backyard pool and sprinkler continued to get heavy use and you took great delight in emptying the pool by taking buckets of water to each group of plants.

Max, you crave consistency. You are constantly asking if something is scheduled for "Today?" or "Tomorrow?" You seem to thrive on knowing when each activity will occur like going to Grandma Beau's, the library, or downtown. Your first question every morning is "The sprinklers on today?" Bedtime is still at 7:30. Over the summer you have been waking up during the night complaining of your mouth hurting. I'm guessing it is those pesky molars. You have also been waking up before 7 am, although you are very aware that you cannot get out of the bed until the clock says 7. Mommy is ready for you to get back on track at night.

Lots of play dates with your friends have rounded out the summer. We have been mostly impressed with how well you interact with others. You are very good at sharing and taking turns - unless it involves your trains. Recently, you took a train away from Everett when he was visiting. After a small altercation Mommy explained that Everett didn't have any trains at home. For days afterwards you continued to tell me in a shocked voice, "Mama, he didn't have any trains at home." How can a person live like that? Catharine was the next friend to come over and you asked me several times, "Catherine have trains at home?" When Catharine did indeed play with the trains and you needed a reminder about taking turns, you told me, "I helping her, Mama." Uh-huh. You do seem much more willing to share with the pretty girls like Sofia and Jayne Grace than with the boys!

Each day is filled with more growth and new excitement! As we finish your big boy room and start preparing to move you out of the nursery, I know that your baby-hood is definitely over. Sometimes the saddest part of parenting is the struggle between not wanting things to end, but
also happily anticipating the newest change.

We love THE MAX!

Love, Mommy
